It’s Mother’s Day in France

Aujourd’hui c’est la fête des mères. The kids are away—Jackie in New York, Max in Spain (for an enterrement de vie de garçon. Can you guess what that is?).

Thank you, Ana, for the thoughtful invitation to lunch, where I was in good company with two other moms (Annie, Ana’s grand-mère, and Catherine, Ana’s mom), two daughters (Ana and her sister Clémentine), and a small pack of adorable dogs.

Before lunch, I was walking to church, in a bubble of mixed emotions, when the sound of someone practicing the guitar slowed my steps, filling me with peace and possibility. The possibility of experiencing the moment through sharpened senses—through artist’s lenses.

I leave you to visualize that moment—a chance encounter involving the gentle strumming of chords, a woman walking by, and birds taking flight. Just enough magic in my morning to want to share it with you on a Sunday.

Bonne fête to all the mothers out there and to those in our hearts.

Yes, mother’s day in France and I wish you a good day (almost gone due to the “decalage horaire”).

Mothers are special people and we must honor them every day.

So, have a good day, I hope that Jean Marc and the children will spoil you today, more than any other day.

And my best wishes for your mother.

Having a son who lives in Brooklyn, who’s on his own bachelor party this weekend on Lake Powell, AZ, your post especially resonated with me today! I hope we hear about Jackie’s current situation in New , York soon. Having observed your kids grow up from afar (& with one of my own who’s never taken a linear path…) I’m always curious about where life is taking them!

  17. Hi Kristi and a Happy Mother’s Day to you and Jules. Thank you so much for sharing your life with us in word. After reading a few of your books including your latest, A Year in a French Life, I had to write a brief note just to say thanks. I fell in love with Provence when my family and I visited many years ago. You are so blessed to be able to live there and raise a family. I know life can be hard and the Lord knows the struggles you and Jean Marc have faced. We all have them, but He somehow pulls us through. Continue to trust in Him and please keep sharing. Blessings on you and your family! Merci, John
