Adieu Sweet Smokey: French for “Dog Heaven”

Sweet Smokey (2)

Forever in our hearts. Goodbye, Sweet Smokey: August 16th, 2009-July 16, 2022

We take a moment to rise above our sadness to thank you, dearest Smokey, for all the humor, love, and care you so generously shared. We will never forget you. As Jackie said, the hardest part is that this marks a new chapter of our lives.

Dear readers, we are gently turning this page here at home, quietly sharing with each other all of our memories of our happy dog days with Smokey. This journal will return in September, along with a new chapter of our lives, salt and peppered with French words, and ever sweetened with memories of our cherished chien who is now in dog heaven or Le Paradis des Chiens.

With love,

Kristi

  1. What a dog, that Smokey! How faithfully he loved, and what steadiness and resilience he displayed. So many wonderful Smokey stories! He is missing from you now but the joy and devotion he brought to your family–and through you to your readers–is his legacy. May God be with you as you grieve his absence. He was such a loving and beloved boy!

  2. Dear Espinasse Family:
Sad news to hear that your dear dog has passed away. To everything there is a season. May Snokey Rest In Peace. May all of you linger in the sweet memories of your loving canine friend.

  3. I know Smokey had a great life! Our pets are family and I am sorry for your loss. Hopefully you can adopt a pet like I just did recently. She is a kitty named Goldie and was desperate for a home She is a sweetheart and makes me smile. Take care.

  4. What more can be said? I hope you’ll feel some comfort upon reading the compassionate comments from your appreciative followers – all wanting you to know how “triste” we are at your loss. You’ve allowed us in to your life……through happy times and more difficult periods……and now, this very sad bereavement of your truly golden, precious family member, Smokey! He was the very best of dogs, and he went to the very best of homes. Beautiful memories will stay in your hearts……be gentle to yourselves.

  5. Dear Kristy and Family
I share your sadness in the passing of your Golden. Mine passed in June.
Goldens are so properly named. So pure of heart. I’m truly sorry for your loss.

  6. Dear Kristin – I “met” you in 2002; it is hard to write Kristi because Kristin it was way back then. Your babies, your early years in France, your lovely stories….all intertwined with the dogs and the food and the wine. Losing Smoky is, indeed, the start of a new chapter: many pages turned to reach this point. From cover to cover of your sharing, I feel still connected although rarely in touch. I can imagine the empty place he leaves in your heart, in your lives. I hope memories fill that void by and by. Take care, Kristi.

    Meilleures salutations,
    Evelyne

  8. Sorry to learn of Smokey’s passing. You could sense his lovely energy in your photographs. Thinking of you!

  9. I missed the announcement of Smokey’s passing, because on July 13 I had an accident in which I broke both legs (including one knee) and have been hospitalized for most of the summer. By the time I was back online you were taking your summer break. I’m so sorry that you have lost sweet Smokey. How is your mother taking it?
I remember puppy Smokey so well and his mom, Breizh. We’ve watched his antics for a very long time.
Because of my accident we had to cancel our trip back to Paris and Provence. Hopefully, next year!
