Magazine article

"My torrid night with a Corsican fisherman" (photo of Elle magazine). It is time to stir things up on this blog. What better way than to write a sizzler! Ready? Your job is to submit a French word. My job is to weave a story with your terms (but not on your terms!).

On y va! Let's go! Scroll to the comments link at the end of this post and submit a French word. I will post our story in the next edition. Va-va-voom!

TODAY'S WORD: remuer les choses

: stir things up, shake things up

AUDIO: Listen to Jean-Marc read the following sentence in French

Le génie est l'aptitude de voir les choses invisibles, de remuer les choses intangibles, de peindre les choses qui n'ont pas de traits.
-Joseph Joubert / Pensées

Genius is the ability to see things invisible, to manipulate things intangible, to paint things that have no features.  – Joseph Joubert / Thoughts

  1. Le brouillard … when I learned the word, while driving through the windy, foggy roads in the Franche Comte region with a French cardiologist who was hoping to win my heart, I realized that the the view wasn’t the only thing clouded.

  2. I suggest the word “incontournable,” which can have more than one translation, depending on context. It’s the type of word that would fit in a story ou on remue les choses.

  3. Rassurer, 2nd choice: Gentiment
Some folks are choosing too many strange words😉

  4. One of my favorites: “vasistas”. From the Petit Larousse: Petit vantail mobile pratiqué dans une porte ou une fenêtre. (de l’allemand “Was ist das?”) It’s said that these small windows are common in the upper part of a door in the Alsace region of France, and when you knock on a door in this German-speaking area, someone inside would often open the window a bit and say, “Was ist das?” Hence this became a French word applied to that type of window.
I can’t believe the number of replies you’re getting!
