I have another confession: I have never been good at
événementiel (or "event organization"). Jean-Marc planned our wedding, each
and every detail (contacted the French priest, ordered the flowers, selected
the menu, had the rings engraved, and all but tried on the long white gown
& satin-trimmed veil for me).
The "big day" found his blushing
bride-to-be tripping over a street grate, late for a very important date! I
have been trying to make up for that unforgettable entrance ever since: by
continuing to "réviser" a simple lesson from my husband: relax and enjoy life
and, especially, celebrate the milestones!
Today marks the 6th
anniversary of this French word journal and I am ready to celebrate this
joyful event. I've ordered the flowers (okay, I swiped several from "Mama
Jules"), and selected the menu: a sweet and savory buffet of words.

Some of the sweetest words I ever heard were spoken in French by my grandparents. They were both immersed in English as a second language at school in Louisiana. They never taught their children French, hoping their English skills would be excellent! So I trudge along…hoping to some day learn enough to get by. I’m 57 and I was an antique dealer for 20 years until about a year ago this time when I left that to go back to what I went to college for, art. I’ve spent the last year trying to figure out exactly what kind of art I want to do because I kind of like to do … everything. I’ve been trying to improve my French speaking skills ever since I took French way back in High School (where everyone else took Spanish and I refused to join them) and my meager French skills have been most helpful the few times I’ve been to Paris Flea markets in search of antiques. J’adore lire votre French-Word-A-Day et je ne peux pas imaginer une vie qui ne comprend pas ce blog, qui m’amuse souvent et qui m’apprend aussi. Je suis en retraite maintenant, mais avant, j’étais professeur de français pendant vingt-cinq ans dans un high school dans l’état de New Jersey. Je suis aussi grand-mère de trois petits-enfants et mère de trois enfants.
Je voudrais avoir une maison en France, pour la visiter plus souvent, mais malheureusement, je ne crois pas que c’est une possibilité pour moi et mon mari. Mais, on ne sait jamais. Je pense, quand même, à autres moyens de visiter plus souvent la France. Peut-être un échange de maisons ?
J’aime beaucoup voyager, être dans mon propre jardin, jouer avec mes petits-enfants et m’amuser avec toute ma famille qui devient plus en plus grande avec les années qui passent.
Kristin, j’ai fait votre connaissance l’avril dernier à New York City dans la librairie Crawford Doyle. C’était un rêve réalisé de faire votre connaissance ! J’espère un jour de vous revoir en France.
Si vous vous souvenez, je suis la dame d’Oak Ridge, New Jersey, une petite ville dans les montagnes de New Jersey du nord. Notre ville et les alentours de West Milford, New Jersey, sont « célèbres » pour les nombreux d’ours noirs qui vivent dans nos forêts. Ici à Oak Ridge, nous voyons souvent aussi des cerfs, des hérons bleus, des dindes sauvages, un renard rouge vu quelquefois et beaucoup de belles forêts. Franchement, il fait froid ici avec beaucoup de neige en hiver, mais nos autres saisons sont très jolies. Heureusement, nous ne sommes pas très loin de la grande ville de New York. C’est bien parce que j’adore bien visiter la ville de Manhattan.

The Word a Day is something that happens and I now realise it would be a terrible miss if I did not receive it. Your enthusiasm and simplicity is very encouraging. I am living in Carlisle, England; I am a retired university lecturer and I have lived and worked in East Africa, in the South Pacific and in the Middle-East [and thereby dabbled in Ki Swahili; Fijian and Arabic] I yearn to speak good French and I totally commit for periods of a year or so and then get distracted. Hence the importance of your daily injection of happiness.

I suspect i am one of the youngest people visiting this site. I am from bonnie wee scotland and i am still at school. I have been learning french for about 6 or 7 years and learning spanish for just over 2 🙂 I am what you would call a “language geek” but i just love it. I have never been to France but I can’t wait till im a bit older to be able to. I really want to move abroad after being to university studying french and spanish, preferably to spain but france will be my holiday 😀

We celebrated the second anniversary of our move to France this summer and next year we celebrate (hush…) our 30th wedding anniversary. My husband Keith, a born and bred true cockney (someone born at the time of the Bow bells ringing), was originally a design electrician in the UK – he still has
family back in Harwich.
Me, Anji (he Tarzan – oops sorry!), from the Midlands and originally from a business family; first became a secretary at the early age of 17 and after having the children (who are now 34, 27 and 28) returned to university to obtain a degree in History (my first love) and then became a teacher – of History; of ESOL; of SEN.
Never really felt at home in England and couldn’t put my finger on why until
we bought our maison secondaire in Brittany – a beautiful cottage in an even more beautiful setting – a the only place I ever felt at home.
My father was Irish, from a beautiful family in Dublin, and I had spent most of my holidays in Ireland, which I had always thought of as home. Apparently, when the Vikings and Normans invaded England, they also invaded Ireland – and with a name of Dunne (originally O’Dunne – anything with an O’ to the front is of Norman stock) we were originally Norman! So maybe I am back to my roots.
Anyway, claim to fame – let me see. We have just opened our chambre d’hote here in the Vienne (where we moved 18 months ago) http://www.legrandsaule.co.uk and we have just found an 11th century doorway that the previous proprietor bricked up. Also a biography I wrote back in 1994 for one of the first ever people to feature on the BBC 999 accident series on Television as just been republished. It is the 20th anniversary since Mr Frederick Jones was
involved in a terrible plane crash and he has had the book republished in order to raise funds for the hospital that put him back together. The title: “Shattered Image – The Life and Loves of a broken Man”
At present it can be purchased either through Fred himself or through Waterstones Bookshop in Merryhill, West Midlands, England – some copies are even signed.

Although I can’t wiggle my ears, I have been speaking French for almost my entire life – My Grandmother lived en Montreal and whenever we visited her the first words after she kissed me were always “ici en parle le Francais,” and I did, and I still do.
Thank you for you wonderful website. Ever since I started receiving your e-mails they have helped to keep me grounded in the South of France from the beginning of October when we leave the midst of les Alpilles and the beginning of the following September when we arrive for our annual month long sojurn there. Maybe next year we will visit your vinyard and, if the vendange is in progress, perhaps Jean-Marc can put us to work – I’m a Master Gardener, so I should be OK out amongst the vines.
PS – Do you and Jean-Marc have plans to visit New York City any time in the near future?
Congratulations on your Sixth Anniversary! My name is Cerelle, and I like to think that I was French in a former life.(my name is the same as that of a small village near Tours which has been there since at least the 1600s.) I used to think I would be able to spend each summer in France, and winters here in Arizona. Life had other plans and tomorrow we will celebrate my mother’s 101st birthday! Still, my ancestor research shows me that some of them were from Vernon near Giverny, so je suis un peu Francaise. I have been a fashion designer, a teacher, an antique dealer, a French faïence collector, a wife, and a “mother” of three French children, and of course, I kissed Maurice Chavelier!

I love the French word a day. I’m a retiree who met and married my husband in Paris in 1962. We spent several years in French speaking Africa and travel back to Paris as often as we can. However, we do forget so much of our French it is nice to be reminded. Merci.

I’m a regular reader et..une femme d’un certain age. I spent time in France in my youth as a student, as you did, but it was in 1968, so although I relate to you in many ways, I really perk up when you write about your mother Jules.
These days I spend much time w/ francophones from West Africa who speak little English (here in Minneapolis, go figure!) so your word-a-day emails are read with great interest and pleasure, as was your book! Since I am a volunteer Bible teacher, I really perked up when I read the chapter titled “Temoin.” Tu vois, je suis Temoin de Jehovah, aussi. La prochaine fois que les dames sont à votre porte, pourquoi ne pas leur demander ce qui les motive à frapper à votre porte. Je crois que tu seras très étonnée de leur réponse. Par exemple, un jour très bientôt les maladies, comme le cancer, n’existeront plus.

In college I teetered between majoring in French or Music — whenever one subject was not going well I consoled myself in that I was majoring in the other. Became a classical singer and voice teacher with a special love of 19th-century French art song and a yet-unfulfilled longing to return to France where I spent 4 of my 12 quarters of undergraduate study.

I have been reading and corresponding with you for about five years—at the beginning I was going through a very difficult time with my father’s death, estate, and litigious brother. Your daily (at the time) post was a welcome diversion!
I am an art historian in central Illinois who focuses on French patrimony of the Middle Ages and its reception in the modern period. You once had my book on the Abbey of Cluny’s history after the Revolution listed on your site but it has fallen off. My latest is an anthology on the life of many medieval monuments and artworks after the Middle Ages.
I love your column and the early books you published yourself, as you know, were made into gifts for multiple friends because I wanted to be sure you had the support to keep working!

I am now a mid-west transplant living in the beautiful and timeless city of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia! I’ve always had a passion for French. Come to think of it, I even chose my confirmation name, Genevieve, (it’s a Catholic tradition) back in the seventh grade solely because she is the patron saint of Paris! I have surrounded myself with French ever since then whether it be as one of my two majors from college, or through France as a focal point of my many world travels. I’m lucky enough to live in the greater Washington, DC area and use French daily at work. My husband even took classes to be able to communicate with me better (in our secret language)!! I stumbled across your website a couple of months ago by chance, and almost immediately ordered your book! Congratulations on 6 years! As someone who just started blogging last year, I know what a commitment it takes to do a ‘thrice weekly’ blog! I’m your mom’s age and like her…I really think I’m no more than maybe 29?? I made my first trip to France in 2005 and I’m hooked..have been back twice since that first visit. My dream is to live a literary life in a tiny village in the Luberon. For now I satisfy that dream by blogging frequently about France and my experiences there.

Je m’appelle Nanyi et j’habite a Toronto, Canada. I am a dyed-in-the-wool francophile, an ex-boursiere du gouvernement francais on TV production. I took a French immersion course in Vichy prior to the main ‘stage’ in Paris and have returned to France more than a dozen times. I’ve kept up with my French by always taking language courses and passed the French language exams while working at the UN as an editor/writer.

My husband and I have had 3 memorable trips to France in the past 4 years, in fact I think one was in your neck of the woods based on your photos. I have only just recently discovered your website and the word -a-day. I’m a dyed in the wool francophile, having graduated with a French Major and a Masters in International Business. I did a six month “stage” in Paris and loved every second of my stay there…of course that was over 20 years ago! I’ve only been back once since then, but hope to go with my daughter in a few years when her high school takes a trip there. I work from home and am enjoying getting a frequent reminder of how much I love French!

Kristin, I am a lover of all things French! My husband and I just got back last night from two weeks in France. A week in Paris and Normandy and a week on a luxurious barge cruising thru Burgundy. I have been reading your Word of the Day for six years now and can’t believe it six years????! I have learned so much from you. I’m a United Methodist pastor living in South Carolina. My passion for French began in school and followed me through college where I graduated with a BA in French. While there, I studied abroad in Aix and came to love the south of France. I discovered your website a couple of years ago and greatly enjoy getting your emails—they help me stay connected to the language since I don’t have a daily reason to speak en francais. I’m married with a toddler son who I’m trying to teach him to speak french as well. We have several children’s books we read. We live in beautiful Avila Beach right in the middle of one of California’s best wine regions. I am a native Californian and 100% Portuguese, but I feel my soul is in France. We travel there, mostly Nice, almost every year, but sadly we didn’t make it this year. On a personal level, I think one of my greatest accomplishments is running the Boston Marathon. I continue to struggle with learning French, and it is a labor of love. Brazilian jazz, Asian design, and the French lifestyle pretty much describe my day-to-day preferences. I’m also a Sign Language Inerpreter, actor, photographer and writer who at one time, almost moved to another country to be with a man I loved, so your story is sometimes the road not taken…yet, lol!?! Je suis américaine, la quarantaine, avec un beau mari doux, qui vient de l’Inde (qui malheureusement lit pas le français 😉 A 20 ans, j’ai passé une année à Paris et puis encore 2 en Suisse. Dernièrement (après presque 20 ans) j’ai repris l’envie de parler français, alors j’y vais! Un de ces jours, je retournerai en France et en Suisse avec mon mari, qui ne les connait pas encore. Nous avons un petit chat qui s’appelle Motor, écaille de tortue, 13 ans, qui est à la fois adorable et méchante, que nous adorons quand même. San Francisco est chez nous, mais on se trouve maintenant à Seattle pour le travail de mon mari. Ça nous plait et on croit rester ici. We met, even before FWAD, on a writing list, and I have been an enthusiastic fan ever since. I’ve studied French, though I can’t say I ever really learned it, but the vocabulary words help me pretend I’m keeping my hand in at it.
I’m 50 something (grr), live with my husband and two cats, and work mostly at home.

Congratulations, dear Kristin on this significant “l’anniversaire”. Your blog arrives each morning with the sunshine! Travelling ( favorite place in the USA – Arizona!)is one of the joys in my life as well as birding,language, jazz, classical music,the musical theatre, reading non-fiction and pampering my “younger then me husband (by four months!)” Together, we have traveled in France two times and once, I traveled to Paris with classmates from Alliance Francais with our “professeur”. A true joy each time and leaves me with a never diminishing desire to go again. Peut-etre I would qualify as the oldest to read your blog, however, in my heart I am “younger than springtime”.
